TYPES OF COLLAGEN – WHICH ONE’S RIGHT FOR YOU??

November 17, 2019 by Alan Snowden

There are about 16 different types of collagen in our bodies, but around 85% are either Type 1, 2, or 3. Each of these types is necessary for different areas within the body, the collagen proteins being sourced and made from amino acids that are in our food. The essential amino acids our body requires are glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, the last of which is found almost solely in collagen originating from animal sources. To assist your body make new collagen, these amino acids are essential. If a bone broth is not a regular item on your menu, then a collagen supplement is a must, especially as we age.

TYPE 1 COLLAGEN

Type 1 collagen is the most plentiful in our body found in the skin, our eyes, in the bone as reinforcing rods in its construction, in tendons, and even in our teeth. Widely recognised for reducing fine lines and wrinkles and improving the texture and quality of our skin. The collagen fibers are the framework for elastin, which maintains skin elasticity. It’s beneficial for enhancing the strength of hair and nails and useful for maintaining the integrity of our muscles, bones, and eyes.

FEMVITAL is our Type 1 product, sourced from highest quality German collagen and scientifically tested to show improvement in the depth and plumpness of the skin and for its ability to help hyaluronic acid preserve moisture, giving the skin a more youthful appearance.

There are parallels between Types 1 and 3 collagen, and these two can be consumed together.

TYPE 2 COLLAGEN

Type 2 collagen fibers make up at least 70% of our joint cartilage. It is found in the eyes and also in our spinal discs. Joint wear and tear, exacerbated by age and or trauma, that cause pain as cartilage deteriorates, and arthritic changes occur. Taking the relevant collagen supplement can improve joint and cartilage quality by encouraging regrowth at a cellular level.

JOINTVITAL is our Type 2 product, also scientifically tested in Germany, and shown to improve the condition of joint cartilage with the flow-on effect of less pain, more movement, and better quality of life.

Type 2 collagen is best taken on its own for better absorption, so if you take Types 1 and or 3 as well, we recommend having one in the morning and the other(s) at night for optimum results.

TYPE 3 COLLAGEN

Type 3 collagen, the second most plentiful type in the body, is found in our intestines, blood vessels, organs, and muscles. As the gastrointestinal tract is made of skin, needing a permeable barrier to function correctly, the glycine and glutamine in Type 3 collagen help aid digestion and support a healthy gut barrier, helping to prevent the breakdown of the intestinal lining.

DIGESTIVITAL is our Type 3 product sourced from 100% high grade, Australian beef collagen. As well as being beneficial for digestion and gut health, helping with conditions like Leaky Gut Syndrome, Type 3 collagen has an overlap with Type 1 collagen, so it is also great for hair and nails and both types can be consumed together.

Here at HEALTHY AND AGILE, we recognise that our bodies need all three types of collagen. Our range of products reflects this, ensuring that you can support your body as a whole, knowing that our collagen products are of premium quality from a leading global supplier. Collagen products are extremely safe to use – they are classed as a food product, and there are no contraindications with medication.

Improving your Gut Health

October 6, 2019 by Alan Snowden

DIGESTIVITAL

HOW IS YOUR GUT HEALTH?

Do you have issues with your gut health? At last, we are starting to talk about this problem with the rise in gut issues that so many people seem to suffer from.

For example:

  • Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth – this can result from:
  • Conditions that affect stomach acid, which usually kills bacteria
  • “Movement” issues in the small intestine which can also cause
  • Crohn’s Disease – inflammation of the digestive tract
  • Leaky Gut Syndrome – where the small intestine’s lining has become damaged thus allowing toxins, bacteria and undigested food particles to enter the bloodstream
  • Do you eat a lot of meat?
  • Are you prone to diabetes?

WHY GELATIN MAY HELP.

Gelatin may be able to help you in several ways:

  • Its water absorption properties help to retain fluid in the digestive system helping to push food through and assist with healthy bowel movements
  • Gelatin contains Glycine which helps maintain optimal levels of acidity in the gut and aids in the breakdown of fatty foods. Research suggests Glycine may also help reduce liver inflammation caused by excess alcohol consumption but more studies are needed.
  • With maintaining a healthy mucosal lining in the stomach
  • With maintaining adequate digestive enzymes by stimulating gastric juices (which may also help prevent reflux)
  • Glycine acts on inflammatory cells to suppress inflammation and formation of free radicals
  • Glycine may improve blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetes; according to (A. Guerard, Ann Hygiene 36,5 1871; H Brat, Deut. Med. Wochenschrift 28 (no 2),21 1902), “Gelatin has been used successfully to treat diabetes for over 100 years”.
  • Gelatin is a low-calorie protein so may assist with weight loss by helping to keep you feeling full and boost metabolism

DIGESTIVITAL FOR GUT HEALTH

  • Digestivital from Healthy and Agile is 100% Australian produced A Grade Gelatin
  • Digestivital contains the amino acids which aid digestion and are essential for good gut health
  • Digestivital taken with a large muscle meat meal is helpful to balance the amino acids before they enter the bloodstream as they (the amino acids) are the same as if produced by the body under extreme stress.
  • Digestivital is collagen which is necessary for our entire body
  • Digestivital is easy to take – dissolve it in anything hot
  • Digestivital is the best value for money available – if you find it cheaper let us know

Inflammation and degeneration in the body cause disease. Gelatin’s amino acid ratio is ideal to help suppress many of the issues associated with aging caused by other amino acids and a 21st-century lifestyle.

Your Healthy and Agile Team

April 24, 2019 by Alan Snowden

A BIT ABOUT US

Suzanne and Iona met nearly 40 years ago when Iona was enlisted to teach Sue’s daughters to ride.  Both women have a strong background in farming and the horse industry – Sue being a cattle breeder, racehorse owner, and part-time rider, with a husband who was heavily involved in the EFA for Showjumping and the Australian Eventing scene as an FEI course designer, builder, coach, and selector;  Iona being the wife of an equine vet, rearing calves and sheep, and managing Ranfurly Park, a small warmblood stud, standing 2 stallions and competing.   Sue has also worked in the gelatin industry for many years and with the knowledge of what this product has to offer and a business plan in mind, Healthy and Agile was born when most sensible retirees would be heading for a cruise ship!

Suzanne and Iona are passionate about their products, knowing that they work and want to spread the word to help people improve the quality of their lives with Jointvital, Femvital, and Basevital (soon to be rebranded Digestivital) – to look good and feel great! Companion animals too often struggle with age and growth related joint issues and so Jointvital Pet was conceived.   Today, there is a glut of hoof supplements available on the market to confuse horse owners and often the active ingredient is only a very small percentage of the product.   Equinevital with its 18 amino acids improves and strengthens new hoof growth – essential in the extreme weather conditions Australia and NZ often experience. It can also help keep joints and cartilage strong, again, essential for any horse in work.

These ladies with their knowledge and enthusiasm are always happy to discuss your needs and will go that extra mile to ensure a happy customer. They welcome wholesale inquiries – there are stockists around the country quietly spreading the Healthy and Agile message.

Remember that gelatin is pure collagen. We are 30% collagen if blood and water are deducted. Healthy and Agile supplements are an ideal natural, healthy fit for our bodies.

Can Dogs and Cats Get Arthritis?

It’s not only humans that are susceptible to arthritis. Even younger dogs and cats, when the circumstances are right, can suffer from arthritic changes. One or more joints may be affected, causing pain and stress for the afflicted pet, making mobility an issue. It is estimated that 20% of pet dogs over the age of 1 year are affected and 61% of cats over the age of 6. Cats older than 14 have an 82% risk of arthritis.

What causes Arthritis in Dogs and Cats?

The most common cause of arthritis in our pets is the result of abnormal rubbing within the joint. This can occur as a consequence of

  • joint instability caused after ligament damage
  • abnormal cartilage development
  • trauma
  • fractures

Arthritis will Shorten your Pet’s Life

Arthritis may be more common in older pets but it can develop at any age. Any joint in the body can be affected but typical areas include but are not limited to the shoulders, neck, back area, the hips, knees, and elbows. It will shorten the life of your pet as the cartilage between the joints slowly breaks down, causing pain and suffering that might range from discomfort to crippling. Resulting inactivity can exacerbate the problem.

Symptoms of Arthritis in Dogs and Cats

  • Slow movements – when it hurts to get up your pet will move slowly to avoid pain
  • Bunny hopping – some pets change their gait negotiating stairs. Reluctance to go up may indicate hip problems; reluctance to go down may indicate arthritic shoulders or elbows.
  • Changing gait or posture – some arthritic pets will limp, other changes may be more subtle such as head bobbing, a lower hind end carriage or the stomach may be held differently.
  • Eating less – it might not be worth getting up to eat if the pain is too great. Large breeds of dogs may find it easier to eat if the bowl is elevated.
  • Weightless movement may cause your pet to gain weight. This puts more stress on already inflamed joints.

Jointvital Pet for Arthritis in Dogs and Cats

  • Easy to feed – just mix in the food
  • Readily absorbed for faster relief
  • No vet visit needed
  • Helps reduce inflammation associated with arthritic changes
  • Recommended by vets

How to fix and avoid thin soles and cracked hooves in thoroughbred racehorses

Does your thoroughbred racehorse have cracked, dry, or brittle hooves, incapable of holding horseshoes? It can be a very time consuming and costly problem for horse trainers to manage and in some cases can lead to horses being decommissioned from racing all together. There is however a solution to the problem that is:

  • Inexpensive

  • Contains necessary amino acids
  • Easy to feed

Thin soles and cracked hooves are common problems for thoroughbred racehorses in Australia

Firstly, it’s important to know, that the thinning of horse soles and the cracking of hooves is a very common problem for owners, trainers, farriers and veterinarians in Australia to deal with. As past owners of many thoroughbreds, most of them off the track, Sue and I are very aware of the unique challenges in dealing with their less than durable hooves. Being bred mainly for speed, conformation and winning edge temperament, the importance of good feet is often overlooked.

Collagen in the Body

February 11, 2019 by Alan Snowden

As we know, collagen is one of the most abundant proteins in the body. This polypeptide is a mixture of amino acids that are present in all our connective tissue, our skin and our cartilage and bone. While we are born with an abundance of collagen the body’s production of it slows down in our mid to late 20’s. With life and environmental factors against us as well, production continues to decline, reducing by 1-2% each year.

January 7, 2019 by Alan Snowden

Don’t know…need answers!!

Collagen, gelatin, collagen peptides, hydrolysed collagen – are they the same? How are they different? All of these are made of the same eighteen types of amino acids and contain eight of the nine amino acids that are essential to the human building block. There are however some slight differences so let me explain.

Benefits of a Collagen Supplement

November 22, 2018 by Alan Snowden

collagen protein powder

Collagen is the current hot word on everyone’s lips. We all know that collagen is plentiful in the bloom of youth with fresh, glowing, elastic skin but after age 25 our natural collagen production begins to slow down, creating a deficit of this essential protein. It is the most abundant protein in our body, found in cartilage, joints, ligaments, bone, blood, skin and muscle and therefore vital to keep us moving and looking great.

Of five good reasons why collagen is essential to your health, the first would be that it has been shown to reduce joint pain. Studies have shown that a collagen supplement can reduce swollen and tender joints thus helping with the symptoms of arthritis. Clinical studies done by the German manufacturers of Jointvital report rejuvenation of joint cartilage at a cellular level, enabling a greater range of movement – meaning more mobility and a better quality of life for many.

During the aging process our skin becomes increasingly dry as it suffers moisture loss. Age, hormones (menopause), nutrition and UV damage are environmental factors that affect the dermal layer structure. Femvital actually helps stimulate the skin’s cells to produce more collagen which starts to change the structure of the skin. Studies have shown a significant reduction in wrinkle depth in as little as 4 weeks, 65% more collagen in the skin, 10% increased skin elasticity and 18% increased elastin in the skin thus helping you turn back the aging clock and create your beauty from the inside.
