How is our Healthy and Agile Gelatin made?

December 12, 2018 by Alan Snowden

Gelatin

Our international manufacturer is one of the world’s largest producers of gelatin and collagen. All Healthy and Agile gelatin products are sourced from Australia’s leading supplier, whose roots are in Germany. They are winners of the 2015 Quality Raw Material Supplier of the Year award, an honour bestowed by The Complementary Medicines Australia Association. This company prides itself on sustainable production with its goal to be waste free. It is also a world leader for product traceability ensuring every batch of product is traceable right back to its source. Reducing environmental impact and maintaining human rights is the core of their business philosophy. They are a contemporary company with a corporate social conscience. This sits well with Healthy and Agile’s principles and ideology on treating the body as holistically as possible.

Gelatin is available in thin sheets or leaf form, and as powder. It is used industrially in many products and in the health and beauty sectors. Gelatin is a highly purified, collagenous protein, the making of which is a modern, complicated process which takes place in a vast array of stainless steel vats and pipes.
The raw collagen (from the hide of cattle or pigs) is broken down into small manageable pieces, placed in liquid and heated to help the collagen dissolve. Any particles remaining in the solution are extracted through a high pressure filter system using very fine ceramic micro filters with pores so small they cannot be seen by the naked eye.
Remaining liquid is then evaporated off and from every 2 litres of collagen solution only about 200ml of honey like collagen concentrate remains. This part of the process is known as concentration.
The honey-like solution is cooled and then pressed through a perforated disc which makes gelatin noodles! They fall into a conveyor belt where they slowly dry. Warm, sterile air is blown over the noodles to evaporate any remaining moisture and the gelatin spaghetti emerging from the dryer is then chopped and milled into powder and stored in 1000 kg bags.
Ultimately there is no ‘standard’ gelatin as every customer has their own specific bloom and particle size requirements depending on the gelatin’s use thus it is tailor made.
To make leaf gelatin it is vital that every sheet has the same properties. The gelatin powder is redissolved in water and poured onto a cooling drum resulting in a film of product which is cut by machine into narrow bands, placed on a net and dried. The firm strips are then cut into leaves and sent off to be packaged.
We also source gelatin that is 100% made in Australia. Our Digestivital and Equinevital are made from Australian beef hides and are of the highest quality available. If you have any queries about our products please don’t hesitate to ask.
