My horse, Grey Label or “Dennis” as we call him, is a talented Novice eventer I am hoping to take through to the advanced grades. However, it has been a battle all the way – not because of any performance problem but simply because of his ghastly hooves!
He has always had the most shocking, brittle feet of any horse I have ever owned. His feet seem to be constantly disintegrating before our very eyes. Trying to keep his feet holding together to stand up to the distance and rigours of an event preparation has been, to say the least, very stressful.
Prior to the Kooralbyn Three Day Event 1999, I was feeding Dennis a very expensive mixture of other commercial products.
Then I got onto Davis Gelatine, which I have been feeding Dennis for six months now.
Even up to six weeks ago I was sceptical but the new growth looked good and his feet are at last showing signs of improvement.
The test came at his last showing when my long-suffering farrier, Wayne Morrow, remarked that the nails actually felt like they were driving into proper hoof!
And best of all Dennis can now be shod every six weeks instead of every four weeks without his feet falling to bits.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Gelatine to anyone having hoof problems.
